This weekend was jam packed with excitement! On Saturday night, I spun at an event in Deltona, FL and it may have been my longest non-stop performance…ever. Six straight hours from 9pm-3am with only a few breaks to refill my drink or use the restroom. Getting my gear hooked up proved to be a challenge at the venue because the DJ booth was small, and not exactly designed for a larger midi controller. The laptop stand was blocking my inputs in the back of the controller, the XLR speaker cables were too short, and we blew a fuse in the lighting controller 30 minutes before my set. Somehow, we managed to work around the fuse issue, extend the speaker cables, and move the support beams on the laptop stand to make room for the inputs all before 9pm. I played a wide range of music, but primarily Pop, HipHop, and RnB. Right now, RnB music seems to be on fire with the likes of Jason Derulo, DJ Snake, Tove Lo, and it somewhat pains me to say this, Nicki Minaj. After a long night, I got home at 4:15am, eventually fell asleep, and then was up again by 7:30 for my usual Sunday morning routine. I’m still tired…ZzZzzzzzZzz….
On Sunday night, I had a meeting in Oviedo, FL at a place called The Black Hammock. It’s an entertainment complex complete with bars, a restaurant, live gator exhibits, and air boat rides. The meeting was to discuss a potential DJ night to liven things up a bit. Also, they needed some assistance getting their DJ/VJ software in better working order. They have what’s quickly becoming the industry standard midi controller (Pioneer DDJ-SZ), but they are also running Virtual DJ…an interesting choice although I can’t say much about that software. Haven’t used it since 2003?!?! I’m not sure what this opportunity will turn into, but it made for some interesting pictures to say the least. Before I left, I had a cocktail while watching the sunset…not a bad way to finish out the weekend!
